This week’s problem

I graduated with a science degree but decided to work as a consultant. However, I do not find consultancy rewarding and I want to rejoin the science world. I have been offered the chance to do a PhD at Cambridge university but I am also looking for jobs in industry. I would still like to end up in a management role someday, so which path is best? Male, 20s

Working as a consultant is a popular choice of first job for new science graduates as they feel it will be a continuation of their degree, being well paid to apply their numerate, analytical skills in a fast-moving, project-based role. Many also feel it will help them develop business skills.

It is also not unusual to feel that first graduate job is not as exciting or stimulating as time at university. It is not as intellectually demanding, you have less control, and you have to adapt to working within an organisation.
