Donald Trump has lashed out at his former lawyer Michael Cohen, accusing his onetime confidant of “mak[ing] up stories” to secure a plea deal from federal prosecutors that implicated the president in a scheme to pay off two women alleging affairs.
The angry outburst on Twitter on Wednesday morning, which included a claim the pay-offs were “not a crime”, came a day after Mr Cohen pleaded guilty to eight charges, including two that alleged the payments were made “at the direction” of the then-Republican nominee.
“If anyone is looking for a good lawyer, I would strongly suggest that you don’t retain the services of Michael Cohen!” Mr Trump wrote, completing a break with an aide who for more than a decade served as all purpose fixer-in-chief.
