A Chinese journalist working for Die Zeit, the German newspaper, has been held in detention for more than three months, the publication revealed on Wednesday, a sign that the political crackdown under President Xi Jinping has been extended to include foreign media.
The paper published a harrowing 6,500-word account about the continuing incarceration of Zhang Miao, who worked as an assistant to Angela Kockritz, Die Zeit’s Beijing correspondent who has since left China.
The episode has cast a harsh light on the often vulnerable position of Chinese nationals working for foreign media organisations in China, who are often subjected to official suspicion and attempts by the authorities to intimidate them.
